Last night in class we discussed the notion of friend raising - and while it sounds funny to think about, bringing a group of people together for a cause and really not expecting anything in return isn't that really the basis for building long lasting relationships?
Consider the One George Campaign - while my first inclination is to just start asking people at random for one dollar in order to contribute to a cause, am I really benefiting the organization in which I desire to help?
Asking for one dollar is not a new idea. I can walk into a store and they will ask if I want to buy a paper balloon for Children's Miracle Network, I can by a paper shamrock for MDA, I can buy a red dress to support something (now that is a good campaign...I don't know what the red dress is for, is it heart health for women?), regardless I can give my one dollar, put my name on a piece of paper and walk away, uncommitted to the organization or the cause it stands for. Is it really effective? Or is it a blatant money grab?
My hope for the One George campaign is that it becomes more than a quest for cash - my hope is that it becomes a "friendraiser" for an organization that truly is serving individuals. The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has a wonderful website and demonstrates who and what they do and are. I've also checked out their Form 990 and the money that is coming in, is going out to help our wounded veterans. I hope we can build awareness and a dedicated group of "friends" to support a great cause. As I said in my previous post, we can make a change, together we can....yes we can!
